The United Nations recognized founder of the I Am Happy Project and Happy Neighborhood Project will be speaking on “Happiness as a Skill: A Different Narrative.”

You can hear him in the Memorial Union Friday, May 10 4-4:30 pm and again on Sunday 10:30-11 am.

The Whole Earth Festival began in 1969 as a small art class project (“Art Happening”) on the UC Davis Quad. The students used art to teach visitors about the realms of activism, wellness, and environmental sustainability in an interactive and creative way. Following the United Nations’ recognition of Earth Day in 1970, the event was renamed to the Whole Earth Festival, fondly nicknamed as “WEF,” and has since evolved into a free student-run event, attracting over 30,000 visitors annually on Mother’s Day weekend.

The Happy Neighborhood Project is a registry for Happy Businesses. Our goal is to humanize the review and feedback systems.

By pulling the focus away from shame-based review systems, the overall energy between a business and consumer can step back from adversarial. Our goal is to humanize the review and feedback systems such that they are a tool for improvement instead of knee-jerk public-shaming.

For businesses, in addition to being listed in our directory, we will conduct training that improves the happiness level of the entire company. Consumers tend to be happier with businesses that have happy employees and a happy environment. We believe that a focus on happiness reaps major benefits to customer service. Consumer feedback will allow us to know if a business needs additional hands-on help as opposed to attempting to negatively affect a business&s bottom line. Our pledge to both businesses and consumers is that their voices will be respected and used to improve interactions and our pledge specifically to consumers is that we will make sure businesses are held to a certain standard.

We are dedicated to both the concepts of entrepreneurship and happiness. We have heard from too many consumers and businesses that the status quo is unfulfilling and counter-intuitive. We wish to provide a better option, we wish to provide change.

We strive to incorporate happiness in the cultures of the businesses that consumers patronize.
